So far, Pendragon_ didn't tell anybody why that happened. Speculations are everywhere.
Icefrog wants to build a new community site and continue developping DotA, so don't fear!

Edit: It sounds very plausible though that it's due to LoL and Pendragon going that way (link) (http://forums.dota-allstars.com/index.php?showtopic=284404).

I can tell you by first hand, that LoL had a lot to do with it. really sad tbh :(
